THE ISSUES

I am running for Hillsboro City Council because I have seen firsthand how thoughtful leadership and planning has led to the exponential growth and expansion of our city and helped us to become the economic engine of the state. We need leaders to consider how the choices we make today will affect Hillsboro in five, ten, and 50 years. I will ensure we have the public services, resources, and infrastructure to handle it.

WORKFORCE & ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

A city is only as strong as its workers. This is why I support of Hillsboro’s Workforce Development programs including The Advanced Manufacturing Training & Education Collaborative of Hillsboro (AM-TECH), and the Youth Apprenticeship program.

WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT

Businesses should be able to hire local employees who are ready and qualified to meet the demands of a growing economy. I will champion the efforts of Hillsboro’s workforce development program which identifies the needs of the businesses in our community and finds the opportunities to “build a diverse and sustainable pipeline of talent to meet our industry needs and maximize employability skills for youth.” I will support these efforts and encourage the city to be active in keeping up with the needs of the continually evolving business community.

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT AND TRAINING

I have been an advocate for the Washington County Chamber’s Career Pathways program and summer internship opportunities for students. I am also inspired by the work that the Hillsboro School District does to help students learn more about the diversity of opportunities that are available to them when they graduate. I will continue to support these efforts and anything the city can do to support them.

SUPPORTING SMALL BUSINESS

As the past board chair of the Washington County Chamber of Commerce I will always be a loud and proud “buy local” supporter. I wrote an op-ed for Pamplin for the 2023 holiday season about shopping local. The sense of pride our community has when a small business grows from a pop up to a brick and mortar will always make me proud to live and work in Hillsboro.

HOUSING

Hillsboro is a great place to live, work, and play. I will advocate for housing at all levels, and work to ensure every neighbor has a safe and warm place to rest their head.

And we need more. I will address these issues by advocating for and supporting MORE: more housing, more support services, more opportunities for all residents to have a safe place to call home.

AFFORDABLE HOUSING

It needs to be easier and more straightforward for everyone to build and get into housing. The decades of planning it took to begin developing South Hillsboro is a testament to patience and perseverance but we don’t have time for that anymore. We need to streamline processes and make things easier (while maintaining safety) and more straightforward at all levels of government. I will advocate for more. More clarity and ease at all levels of the housing crisis from land use to construction to getting into homes. Every time a new development pops up in our community I know it’s just a drop in the bucket of what we need.

ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY

I joined the Environmental Stewardship Committee in 2023 to learn more about how our city is working to be green and environmentally friendly, and what steps we can take to ensure our city’s climate action plan will succeed. I will continue to support the efforts and recommendations of the Environmental Stewardship Committee, which is working with business and community members to ensure we are thoughtfully growing and leaving a city that can be enjoyed for generations to come.

ENERGY USE

On a tour of Genentech, as a member of the Environmental Stewardship Committee, I saw the work they are doing with solar energy and battery storage to take some reprieve off the grid. I will encourage more companies in the North Hillsboro Industrial Area to move in this direction, especially data centers.

SUPPORTING THE CLIMATE ACTION PLAN

I am thrilled that the city will be adopting their Climate Action plan next summer. It will be an honor as a new City Councilor and a member of the Environmental Stewardship Committee to finalize this plan and bring it into reality, something that I know the council has prioritized in this biennium.

PUBLIC SAFETY

We all want our families to be safe. I ran the City’s Public Safety Levy in 2022 which supports police, fire, and parks maintenance and passed with 83% of the vote. I will continue to support efforts that provide and enhance public safety in our community.

As the county seat, we see an increased level of challenges with overcrowding in the county jail leading to forced release. I support getting the jail back to full operating levels and will work with public safety leaders to keep Hillsboro safe.

DEI

In my time on the Washington County Chamber of Commerce Board I was proud to support efforts to expand our Diversity Councils from the long standing Latino Business Advisory Council to include the Black Advisory Business Council, the LGBTQ+ Business Advisory Council, the Veterans Business Council, and most recently the Asian/Pacific Islander Business Advisory Council. By supporting diversity in business we help make our community a more inclusive place to live, work, and play.

ARTS & CULTURE

Hillsboro is a world-class city, and it deserves a world-class arts and culture scene. We have many incredible arts organizations and the City Council can provide important leadership to ensure they can meet the challenges of the future. We know that the arts support our local economy, from the monthly Art Walk to anytime one of our great theaters has a production – and these events help spur downtown revitalization. Our city’s ambitious Cultural Arts District can be a more effective tool to support that growth, and, with the implosion of the Regional Arts and Culture Council, I will recommend that we create an equitable and sustainable anchor grant program for arts organizations to ensure their longevity and success.
